Pebble Beach Golf Links is generally known for dramatic finishes in major championships. However, the 78th US Women’s Open wasn’t one of those, Allisen Corpuz happily claiming a comfortable three-shot win along with the $US2 million first-place cheque.
Starting the final round a shot behind Nasa Hataoka and in the final pairing, Corpuz, 25, got after it right from the start staking a shot from 124 metres at the first to five feet and making birdie. A big 11-foot par save followed and a 12-footer for birdie dropped at the third. Another birdie at the seventh had things rolling.
Still, she was tied with Hataoka playing the 10th, but another stellar approach led to another birdie and the lead. A curling 16-foot par save at the 12th kept her two in front and then Corpuz, in her second year on the LPGA Tour, spun a wedge back at the par-5 14th to four feet, made the birdie putt and went ahead by three. She would finish the day with a three-under 69 to get to nine-under 279 total.
Corpuz’s Ping i230 irons and Glide 4.0 wedges (all with Nippon Modus 105 S shafts) were working all week. She was six-under on the par 4s for the week – the only player under par on the par 4s – and ranked T-3 in greens in regulation. That helped lead to a championship-high 17 birdies.
She also was fourth in putts per GIR with her 33.5-inch Ping 2021 DS 72 putter, a smaller mallet shape similar to one used on the PGA Tour by Viktor Hovland.
Unlike Hovland, however, Corpuz now has a major championship. And per Ping custom, will have a solid-gold replica of the putter placed in the company’s putter vault that houses replicas of every Ping putter to win an event. For Corpuz, it is her first. But unlikely to be her last.
